Minispin Rock Magnetometers
including NEW Large Sample Minispin

-THESE INSTRUMENTS ARE CURRENTLY OUT OF PRODUCTION-

Standard Minispin

Top View of Minispin

The Minispin is a low cost, high sensitivity portable fluxgate spinner magnetometer, manufactured by MOLSPIN, Ltd. It offers performance surpassing other commercially available systems at a fraction of the cost. It is the only truly portable computerized spinner magnetometer. The instrument is of rugged construction, and can be powered by battery or line current making it convenient for laboratory and field use.
Specimens are spun at 6 Hz about a vertical axis inside a triple-shielded, annular fluxgate, the output from which may be integrated over 6 or 24 seconds. Integration is effected digitally and the magnitude and phase of the signal are extracted by Fourier analysis. In its simplest configuration the results are displayed as two orthogonal components of magnetization on a 5 digit liquid crystal display.

Data processing can be automated by interfacing the Minispin with a notebook or laboratory computer. The Minispin comes complete with an RS232 interface contained in the instrument. Price includes Molspin DOS and Windows software for controlling the Minispin operation and computing mean directions and Fisher statistics. A Macintosh version of this program is also available at an additional cost.

New Large Sample Minispin

This is a development of the Minispin. It is a low-cost, high sensitivity portable slow-speed fluxgate magnetometer. It is of rugged construction, battery or mains-powered, and it may, therefore, be used either in the field or in the laboratory. Its performance in terms of noise level and convenience is better than the conventional laboratory instrument. Specimens are spun at 6 Hz about a vertical axis inside a triple-shielded, annulus-shaped fluxgate, the output from which may be integrated over 6 or 24 seconds. The results are displayed as two orthogonal components of magnetization on a 6-digit liquid crystal panel. Integration is effected digitally and the magnitude and phases of the signal are extracted by Fourier analysis.

Portable large sample Minispin Specification:

Specimen size: 50 mm cube - 25 are supplied with the instrument.

Integration time: Either 6 seconds (24 spins), or 24 seconds(120 spins).

Sensitivity/Noise level: 3.5 x 10-8 EMU.CM-3 (3.5 x I 0-5 A/m) for 4 spins at the 24 sec's time constant.

Data output: On single 6-digit liquid crystal panel, with figures 8mm high. The display normally indicates the 'NORTH' component. The 'EAST' component is obtained by the press of a button. One (two) figures after the decimal point are indicated for 6 sec's (24 sec's integration time).  The data is also available via an RS232 serial link that also controls the instrument. .A USB adaptor is available.

Range: 4 decade attenuator.

Power supply: : Battery or mains 240 or 110 V. The life of the batteries approx. 8 hours in continuous use. The batteries are rechargeable from 240/110 V mains or a 12 V car battery. The power consumption is 8 W.

Data processing: A serial interface is fitted inside the Minispin allows it to be controlled from a computer. The interface is a RS232, working at 4800 bauds. It controls the Minispin and passes the results back to the computer. If a notebook computer is used the kit becomes fully portable.

Programs: Programs are provided in Windows.
