KAPPABRIDGES FOR MEASUREMENTS OF MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY

  • IN-PHASE AND OUT-OF-PHASE
  • ANISOTROPY
  • FIELD VARIATIONS
  • TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS
General Description
The KLY5 Kappabridges are the most sensitive commercially available laboratory instruments for measuring magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS). KLY5 series brings precise absolute measurement of both in-phase and out-of phase components of magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility.

KLY5-A  Kappabridge

Spinner/Static Combination

Fully equipped with special Up/Down mechanism and rotator allowing to use spinning specimen method which uses 3D rotator or classic rotator for easy, rapid and precise AMS measurements. Automatic routines for investigation field variations of AMS as well as bulk susceptibility are incorporated for better user comfort. Optional attachments CS4 and CS-L enables measurements of temperature variation of bulk susceptibility from -192°C up to 700°C.

Main Features

  • High sensitivity 2 x 10-8 SI (for field 400 A/m)

  • High sensitivity of phase determination 0.1°
  • Fully automatic zeroing system

  • Measurement of in-phase and out-of-phase susceptibility

  • Automated measurement in variable fields

  • Quick AMS autorange

  • Enhanced resistance to power lines noise

  • Galvanically isolated USB connection

  • Sophisticated software support

  • Built-in circuitry for controlling optional CS4 Furnace and CS-L Cryostat

  • Optionally 3D rotator (KLY5-A)

KLY5-B  Kappabridge
Static Only Version

Basic version of Kappabridge for manual measurements of AMS, bulk susceptibility and field variations of magnetic susceptibility without Up/Down mechanism, rotator and CS4 or CS-L support. To faciliate AMS measurements magnetic susceptibility must be manually measured in 15 different orientations. Can be upgraded to KLY5-A version, but such upgrade has to be done in AGICO facility.

Software

Data acquisition software Safyr controls all particular functions of the Kappabridges, calculate results of individual measurements as well as advanced statistics on measured data. Standard visualisation of the results is also incorporated. For more in-depth analysis of AMS AGICO provides Anisoft – advanced software for processing of AMS datasets.

Available accessories for the KLY5-A include:

3D Rotator

3D-Rotator brings increased speed and better comfort of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements. The 3D-Rotator rotates the specimen simultaneously about two axes with different velocities. The 2-axis rotation enables to determine 320 directional susceptibilities during a single anisotropy measurement. These directions are very well distributed on a sphere which makes the measuring design almost rotatable. The actual measurement is fully automated in such a way that, once the specimen is mounted into the rotator, it requires no additional manipulation to measure the full AMS tensor. The approximate duration of one anisotropy measurement including bulk susceptibility is 1.5 min, compared to more than 3 minutes when the classical (3-plane) rotator is used.

Main Features:
  • Rapid anisotropy measurements with full autoranging
  • One specimen in less than 2 minutes
  • Specimen inserted only once
  • One manual handling minimizes specimen misorientation
  • Automated AMS measurement in variable fields
  • Bulk susceptibility automatically measured right after anisotropy measurement
  • Anisotropy tensor automatically calculated from 640 directional susceptibilities
  • Sophisticated software support
  • For MFK1-FA/A and KLY5-A Kappabridges

CS-4 Furnace Apparatus

The CS4 High Temperature Furnace Apparatus is optional attachment for KLY5-A, MFK2-FA and MFK1-FA/A Kappabridges designed for measurement of the temperature variations of low-field magnetic susceptibility of minerals, rocks and synthetic materials in the temperature range from ambient temperature to 700°C. Measurements can be performed under the protective argon atmosphere to prevent oxidation of measured specimen. The quasicontinuous measurement process is fully automated, being controlled by the software Sufyte5. Data processing software Cureval serves for advanced analysis of thermomagnetic curves such as empty furnace measurement substraction, Curie temperature estimation and separation of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic part of susceptibility.

Main Features:
  • Lowest detectable susceptibility change 1×10-7SI
  • Measurement at high temperatures up to 700° C
  • Software controlled heating and cooling modes
  • Measurement in the air or argon atmosphere
